THE ARTIST BEHIND THE CAMERA
Nice to meet you, I'm Joseph Coales (my friends call me Joey) a Documentary Wedding Photographer from Nottinghamshire. Here’s an interview I did with myself because a wedding website told me too.
Where did your love of photography come from?
Growing up there were always cameras lying around, both of my parents loved (still love) photography and film and nurtured my curiosity. I don’t remember the first time I used a camera but I know that something very exciting happened when I looked at the world through the viewfinder. I would eventually go on to study all aspects of Photography and Film-Making and be fortunate enough to make a career out of collecting beautiful bits of life.
What’s the thing you love most about being a wedding photographer?
Honestly my initial intentions with photography and film was to make art. Shooting weddings started around the time all my friends started getting married. They trusted me and liked my perspective so thats where the adventures started. There’s not many places of work that deal exclusively in love and happiness like weddings do, it’s a privilege to be asked into such an intimate space to capture the beauty of marriage.
Whilst I’m entrusted with photographing one of the biggest days in a families life it’s also my responsibility to not impose myself and become a distraction. I love being able to capture the significance of moments without directly affecting them and I feel lucky that I can do that for a living.

What makes you stand out from the other photographers out there?
I’m primarily a Documentary/Photojournalist style photographer with elements of editorial thrown in. I pride myself on being able to capture what a couple wants from their wedding no matter the style or size. I don’t impose myself or try to be part of the wedding unless i’m asked, my style is to blend in and capture the moments you may not expect but to always capture the moment you are expecting. I’ve been working with cameras for around 20 years, shooting for all sorts of eclectic brands and companies. and i’ve also been there to capture many beautiful wedding days. I feel my experience, passion and geekiness about all things cameras has not only developed my skills with the equipment I use but my eye for detail and professionalism.
